The needs identified by the National Program of Mental Health recognize the current deficiency of epidemiological and reference information, as well as socio-economic inequalities  that exist regarding the access to appropriate care. STOP Depression aims to promote an improvement in the capacity of primary health care in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of depression and suicide prevention. Thus, the project will generate the following general outcomes:

  • A set of effective and lower cost care management services for depression and suicide, based on the existing structure in primary mental health care;
  • A set of guidelines based on evidences for the treatment of depression and management of suicide risk;
  • Reference information that enables future decision-making.

Specifically, the project expects to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Decrease the number of undiagnosed situations of depression;
  • Decrease the number of unidentified situations of suicide risk;
  • Decrease the number of suicides and suicide attempts;
  • Increase the number of people with depression treated properly, as well as the promotion of the satisfaction level with treatment;
  • Decrease the socioeconomic burden of depression.
